Cascoxu Hostel is placed on Llanos de Somerón, a small village in Pajares Valley, in Lena, Asturias. The town is almost 900 meters above sea level, at the gates of the biosphere reserve Ubiñas- La Mesa.   Our hostel has an extraordinary position. It is located equidistant 20 Km with Poladura de la Tercia and Pola de Lena, third and fourth stage of the Jacobean route of the Camino del Salvador, León-Oviedo.

Cascoxu is in central area of the region so if you stay here it is really easy to visit the most tourist places in Asturias.

We offer a room for 16 people with a large shared bathroom. Kitchen for users, porch, parking and garden spaces. In the multipurpose room we offer food and beverage service. There is free WIFI.

A reason for pride is our organic garden for self-consumption where we grow our exquisite arbeyos, a local variety of dried peas of appreciated gastronomic value that you can taste in our hostel.  

THE HOSTEL

The room has individual bunk beds (90x200 cm) and double bunk beds (150x200 cm). The bedding is composed of a fitted sheet, a pillowcase (both disposable), a pillow and a blanket.

It has heating, side tables, shelves, lockers, first-aid kit, sockets and reading light. There is a shoerack in the access to leave the outer shoes outside the room.

Inside the room there is a large mixed-use bathroom with 3 toilets and a large stainless steel sink. The shower area has 2 independent cabins with a bench and a coat rack. Both areas have sockets and a shelf with hangers to place everything you need for personal hygiene.

The hostel kitchen is equipped with sink, drainer, cabinets, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and kitchenware. Also a tabletop induction hob is available in the case of renting the entire accommodation. A table with chairs, a bar and stools complete the equipment.

On the lower floor, the hostel has a multipurpose living-dining room, reception, bar and leisure space. Outside on the ground floor there is a garden with swings and wooden tables under the porch. We also have a barbecue. A large outdoor space surrounds the hostel in the parking area, where we have a terrace.

April, May, October and out of season, booking in advance is always required*. Low season we´re only available for groups (minimun 6 people). Cascoxu is closed to the public for two months between December and March depending on the snow season.

*We schedule our days off based on demand. Book well in advance to ensure that we´re not close. 

TOURISM ACTIVITIES 

The council of Lena is one of the most attractive places to experience nature in a relaxed way, enjoying the scenery, routes and trails. But it is also the ideal destination for lovers of any mountain sport due to Lena is in the heart of the Cantabrian mountain range.

Lena, cycling destination. This region is a mountain biking paradise because of its imposing peaks. Names such as Coto Bello, Cobertoria, Cubilla, Cuitu Negru or the famous Angliru are already a living legend for cycling fans. If you prefer to pedal off-road, you will be delighted by the Roman road Via Carisa and the innumerable tracks and country roads.

Lena, mountain destination. Only Las Ubiñas have more than 50 peaks above 2,000 meters. Dare with any of them crossing to look out at the landscape ... above the same sky.

Lena, nature destination. Deers, bears or wolves... To observe nature and wildlife, join professional mountain guides.

Lena, snow destination. If you like snow sports, we are 25 minutes from the Valgrande-Pajares snow station and one hour from San Isidro and Fuentes de Invierno stations. These places are not only attractive in winter, you will find entertainment at any time of the year.

PILGRIMS. CAMINO DEL SALVADOR.

The route that leads from León to Oviedo / Uviéu is, fundamentally, a mountain route so it requires a good state of form. In return, the itinerary will give away some places of majestic beauty, especially as it descends from Pajares. Crossing the extensive council of Lena means advancing along paths as arduous as they are beautiful, where the plains are not abundant. The itinerary always avoids traffic on the N-630 road, using a network of tracks that always served as communication and transit between rural populations. 

THE STAGE ACROSS PAJARES VALLEY

From the top of Pajares, the path deviates to the right before reaching the top, just behind the “Venta Casimiro” bar. At its back, we go up the hill a short distance to get the first Asturian landmark close to a high voltage tower. 

Once in Asturias we are within the Reserve of the Biosphere Las Ubiñas-La Mesa. We descend along a fairly steep slope to the road and cross it to take the forest track that starts straight ahead, arriving in 300 meters at the point where the itinerary forks: straight ahead towards the town of Pajares. To the left towards San Miguel del Río.

When we get San Miguel (after a long descent, always on the track) either from the crossroads or from the town of Pajares, we follow a local road. You have to forget about landmarks and pay attention to the yellow arrows that, in this case, on the left, lead upwards to the village of Santa Marina. 

After going around the chapel and before the end of the village, on the right-hand side, a very steep concrete track starts along a very narrow street. When we reach a block, just 50 meters further on, we turn right leaving the concrete, accessing the path between the block and an imposing oak (sometimes the path is blocked to prevent the passage of animals). We continue along the path surrounded by a stone wall for a section, facing north. We will find several gates and after some steep slope the two paths coming from Santa Marina join to continue the ascent through the forest, always heading north, to Llanos de Somerón (Chanos).

If the concrete is not abandoned, the Pando track is reached in about 500 meters of very hard ascent. Towards the left, heading south, the grizzly’s territory... On the right, the track also leads to Chanos, in a gentle descent with views over a large part of the valley. Depending on the option chosen, in about half an hour you will find our Cascoxu Lodge, a new lodging to regain strength and taste our exquisite arbeyos.

We leave Llanos by the local road that descends to Puente de los Fierros. Before entering the town, we turn left onto a rising path. A first demanding ramp takes us through a gate. Later, after getting around another gate, we enter Fresnedo. At the bottom of the valley, you can enjoy the view over the Sierra del Aramo and the Gamoniteiro peak.

The path runs along the dense hillside for more than an hour, passing near the hermitage of San Miguel and Las Xanas fountain. At Herías there is a crossroads to the Bendueños Sanctuary, a site with millenary roots whose history extends beyond a primitive settlement. Few accommodations on the Camino  can boast nowadays  of continuing to offer accomodation since the beginning of the pilgrimages. This is the case of the Bendueños parish shelter. There is still a dizzying descent to Campomanes, from Herías or from Bendueños.

In Campomanes we have to cross the N-630 road and just after the Pajares river, we turn left to take the river walk. We see the confluence of the Pajares and Huerna rivers, which form the Lena river. Santa Cristina de Lena is our next objective and half an hour later the pre-Romanesque hermitage stands out on a hill. In Santa Cristina we go down a cobbled path located on the opposite side. We passed through the Peridiello neighborhood seeing La Cobertoria railway station. The Camino, however, continues straight ahead and later crosses the Lena River. Vega del Ciego is out of the itinerary on the other side of the A-66 motorway. The Camino del Salvador passes next to the football field and crosses the highway to enter Pola de Lena.
